The inscription begins with two poetic lines reading cao shen yi fu lu, song lao yu cheng long, which may
be translated as ‘the tall grass are ideal for deer to rest in, the old pine trees desire to become dragons’.
This is followed by the date ‘twelfth month of the twenty second year of the Kangxi reign’ and the
signature Ziyang, Liu Tingwen from Hongdu, ending with two seal marks containing the characters Liu
and Tingwen respectively.
