A JADEITE 'ABSTINENCE' PLAQUE AN ONYX AND QUARTZ 'DRAGON' SEAL
QING DYNASTY (1644-1911) 19TH-20TH CENTURY
The plaque is carved with two confronting openwork archaistic kui dragons The seal is carved from a naturally-occurring combination of onyx and quartz,
framing a rectangular panel which is inscribed on one side with the characters and is fnely worked to the upper section with a dragon coiled amongst densely
'zhaijie', which may be translated as 'abstinence'. The inscription is repeated in scrolling translucent clouds. The carved seal face reads 'Zhan Jing Zhai' (The
Manchu on the reverse. The stone is of an even, pale greenish tone with some Hall of Profound Stillness).
