AN IMPERIAL BLUE-GROUND RECTANGULAR KESI ‘LOTUS’
PURSE
18th/19th century
Finely woven in gold and multi-coloured threads with a central Shou
character enclosed within scrolling acanthus leaves, beneath a bat and
above a blossoming yellow lotus issuing from the terrestrial diagram
rising from rolling waves and a lishui border, suspending two blue
tassels and a silk hoop for attachment, the interior lined pink with two
compartments to carry a personal ritual possession like a small scroll.
The purse 13cm (5 1/8in) long.

A PAIR OF FINELY-EMBROIDERED ‘DRAGON’ PURSES
19th century
Finely embroidered on each side in polychrome thread with two
sinuous gold dragons confronting a flaming pearl, all amidst vaporous
clouds, sewn together at the side, tied at the neck with a pair of
incense-green drawstrings each suspending a tassel with four-
coloured red, blue, white and brown, couched silk closures.
Each 11.5cm (4 1/2in) wide. (2).

A RARE MIDNIGHT-BLUE-GROUND SILK EMBROIDERED
‘BUTTERFLY AND DOUBLE-GOURD’ INFORMAL SURCOAT,
CHANGPAO
Early 19th century
The front-opening surcoat finely embroidered on the front and
back panels with eight symmetrically-placed round floral roundels
each meticulously embroidered with a profusion of double gourds
individually decorated with various diaper patterns, all issuing from
leafy and curling stems amidst multicoloured butterflies, all above the
intricate finely-drawn turbulent wave border incorporating lingzhi-form
vapor and the Auspicious Emblems in the wind-tossed waves rising
from a deep lishui stripe, the details embroidered in bright, shaded
tones of red, green, pale orange, yellow, blue and white with very fine
gold thread highlighting diaper designs, the wave borders repeated at
the cuffs beneath three smaller gourd and butterflies roundels on each
sleeve, all reserved on a midnight-blue ground, the entire garment in
lined blue, with gilded buttons.
