A LARGE MOTHER-OF-PEARL INLAID
BLACK LACQUER GARMENT BOX
(OTSANGJA)
Joseon dynasty (1392-1897), 19th/20th
century
Of rectangular form, the black lacquer ground
inlaid with crushed mother-of-pearl tiles in a
pattern of peony blossoms and leaves issuing
from scrolling stems of crimped wire extend
around the side walls of the box and repeat
across the cover framed by rows of disks and
stylized bats at the corners within crimped
wire bands, the rows of disks also repeated
along the low walls of the cover; the interior
surfaces finished with red lacquer and the
base of the box showing a thin layer of black
lacquer

with similar decoration and of similar size
(12 1/8 x 27 3/4 x 15 1/2in [30.8 x 70.5 x
39.4cm]) and decoration was published in
Hyunsoo Woo (ed.), Treasures from Korea:
Arts and Culture of the Joseon Dynasty, 1392-
1910 (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2014),
cat. No. 2-32, p. 168 (as 19th century). See
also the black lacquer box of smaller size (16
3/4 x 10 x 7 1/2in [42.5 x 26 x 19.1cm]) with 997
crushed mother-of-pearl inlay forming stylized
blossoms and leaves on scrolling stems of
crimped wire and rows of disks on the cover
sides, sold in Christie’s, New York sale, 15
April 2016, lot 119 (as 19th century).
