Kokuho Shimei was active during the late Edo period
(19th century) as a Nagasaki school artist. His style is
an interesting mixture of various cultures – he took the
Chinese literati style nanga and Korean Joseon period
folk art minhwa as foundations and mixed them with
Western techniques. His art demonstrates the cultural
exchanges between Japan and other countries. Kokuho
Shimei's another example of tiger painting is in the
collection of Fukuoka City Museum.
