                                             The eldest son of the great Kyoto artist
                                             Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795), Ozui is
                                             generally renowned for his close fidelity to his
                                             father’s pictorial manner. Here, however, his
                                             model is the style of richly detailed Buddhist
                                             painting established by the Chinese painter
                                             Li Longmin (1049- 1106), whose name is
                                             traditionally associated with several sets of
                                             rakan painting preserved in Japanese temple
                                             collections.
