Naruse Seishi – Meiji period
“Naruse Seishi was a highly skilled pottery decorator, started pottery at the age
of 13 and at the age of 17 moved to Tokyo and builded a kiln there. Later he ran
a workshop Tohaku-en (Pottery Exposition Garden) in the vicinity of the Zojoji
Temple in Tokyo around 1886. The practice of painting on ceramic blanks bought in
from other parts of the country - like among others Satsuma (Taizan) - was common
at the time. Some of his work is unsigned. Other pieces are signed with his name
and/or the name of his workshop Tohaku-en.” (Louis Lawrence ).
