UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE (1797-1858) To capitalize on the great success in the 1830s of Hiroshige’s
View of Saijo, Iyo Province landscape series of the Tokaido and Kisokaido roads, the publisher
Koshimuraya Heisuke embarked on the ambitious project that
Woodblock print, from the series Rokujuyoshu meisho zue (Pictures resulted in Sixty-odd Views of the Provinces, released between 1853
of famous places in the sixty-odd provinces), signed Hiroshige hitsu,
and 1856. He engaged Hiroshige to design single views of famous
published by Koshimuraya Heisuke (Koshihei), 9th month 1855
spots in each of Japan’s sixty-eight provinces, which are identified in
Vertical oban: 14¡ x 10¿ in. (36.5 x 25.8 cm.)
