A CLOISONNÉ BOX AND COVER
TAISHO PERIOD, 20 TH CENTURY
the rectangular box with flush-fitting cover
and rounded corners, decorated in various
coloured cloisonné enamels and thicknesses
of silver wire on a greyish ground, with rice
farmers in a field before distant hills, the rim
with oak leaves and acorns, brocade lining,
silver mounts

Presented to Mr and Mrs Duncan Mackenzie
Macfarlane, OBE, by HIH Princess Chichibu.
Duncan L.M. Macfarlane (1907-1998) moved to
Japan in the 1930s and became representative
in Kobe of MacDonald Hunter and Co., a
shipping company. He retired in 1962 and was
awarded the OBE for his services to shipping
and British interests in Japan, and the Order
of The Sacred Treasure from the Japanese
government. He was a vice chairman of the
Japan Society, England, 1963-1981.
