Newsletter of the European Chiropractors’ Union
Convention
“Dr Dave Newell compared the treatment package offered by chiropractors to a wrapped-up candy. The wrapper represents the contextual factors complementing the chiropractor’s treatment arsenal (the candy). Contextual factors include amongst others the patient-doctor interaction as well as
the explanations given by clinicians to their patients. Delegates were made aware of
the importance of these factors in achieving speedy recovery from a painful condition. These factors are powerful tools enabling the clinician to maximise the effect of treatment, thus helping patients achieve better outcomes. As such, the ‘wrapper’ should not be forgotten when developing the next plan of care.“

“Prior to Dr Carlo Rinaudo’s presentation, I had read research on cervical proprioception training and its role in the rehabilitation
of WAD. I have tried to implement the knowledge in my daily practice to the best
of my abilities. However, his presentation
and more importantly the breakout session that followed allowed me to converse with
Dr Rinaudo and put together all the pieces
of the puzzle I needed to draw up a best practice protocol which I started using in my practice the following week. I truly hope more colleagues will get a chance to attend the convention in the future and improve their skillset.”

“A chiropractor learns to master highly technical, intellectual, communicative and psychological skills. Who needs gurus if we have chiropractic? Let’s all get excited as one group about getting disappointed by research, from time to time. Let’s mourn together about the good old days in our private practices but be refreshed by striving to work with each other and others with honesty and humility. The ECU conference
is THE forum for this and we need every chiropractor to be there.”

“A session based upon the UK and
Danish guidelines for managing lumbar radiculopathy, published in 2017, gave groups of chiropractors a chance to
discuss history, findings and treatment before being presented with the guideline recommendations. It was a chance to get a better understanding of national guidelines, and was a lot of fun as it gave an insight into colleagues’ way of handling specific cases.” Sweden
“The presentation by Iben Axen on maintenance care and the spinal stenosis boot camp included research that is of very high clinical relevance for all of us... Often people comment that research does not relate enough to clinical life, but here were two great exceptions.”
