This Electrical Generator Service Technician Apprentice study guide is designed to assist the student in
locating information from EGSA and other textbooks as related to the seven duty areas and 53 tasks defined
for this job classification. These duty areas and tasks were identified in the DACUM (Develop A CUrricu-
luM) process administered by Ferris State University. The DACUM is an in-depth duty and task analysis
that serves as the base for the EGSA Apprentice certification exam.

Included in this study guide are the actual duties and tasks identified in the DACUM so the user may see,
first hand, the results of the study and items that may be encountered on the actual exam. Each category has
numbered job duties and lettered tasks under the job duty.

A general reference is given to the EGSA book or other references where applicable and specific page num-
bers when possible. In most cases however, general reference to chapters is given.

The EGSA Apprentice exam is very broad in scope and not all material on the exam is found in the pages of
the EGSA text. It is assumed that the technician studying for the exam will have had experience, classroom
training, on-the-job training, or a combination of the aforementioned. It should be expected that an inexpe-
rienced technician or someone just studying from the text and/or study guide will likely NOT pass the exam,
        and additional experience is necessary.

While not every technician will work in every area of this field, and some knowledge may be lost over
time, the exam is extremely comprehensive. It is suggested then that the technician preparing for the exam
consult several reference texts on diesel, exhaust, propane and gasoline engines and electric power genera-
tion. While some texts have been identified within this guide, what the reader feels most comfortable with
        is always recommended.

The study guide practice exam has 164 practice questions. All questions are multiple-choice with four
answers, one of which is correct. Some questions may have more than one correct answer, in which case the
best answer (or all of the above, if available) must be selected. Most questions contain an explanation why
it is correct or incorrect. The areas of questioning were taken from the actual exam and have been re-writ-
ten to emulate the question without being an exact duplicate. The question forces the test-taker to focus
on particular areas where education is needed. With these areas identified, references may be consulted to
update knowledge before taking or retaking the practice exam.

The EGSA Apprentice exam is difficult and covers a broad spectrum of generating systems. It is however,
forthright and fair. The test was developed by a panel of experts from the industry and covers topics that
industry wants its technicians to know. Good luck.
