WHAT I LEARNED FROM DEW POINT
1. Moisture can form anywhere.
2. All air has moisture in it.
3. Moisture can form in or on clothes used as layers for warmth.
4. Heat generation is slowed with moisture in the air.
5. Cooling increases even without visible wetness.
6. Wind and Dew Point can create a perfect freeze scenario.
7. Air Temp and Dew Point can create a Perfect freezing environment.
8. Dew from dew point can permeate solid materials.
9. Lower elevations create dew points faster than higher elevations.
10. Core body temp loss occurs even in relative enclosed areas due to Dew point.
“I learned in reading and studying for this novel that in Minnesota which experi-
ences a high degree of humidity in the winter with no radiant heat from rocks or
conductive plant life, outdoor temperatures could not be trusted to be as thought of
as warm or safe as appearing because of relative humidity and dew point.
Simple camping gear or clothing were not enough to ensure safety if temperatures
dropped below freezing. This same effect happens to air planes in higher eleva-
tions when high humidity created freezing air in jet engines causing stall.
Some storms clouds and planes not equipped flying thru have crashed from weath-
er related events.
On the Mississippi River sitting on water in a kayak with Dew Point, humidity,
wind chill, dropping temps, lake effect snow, narrowing ridges, funneled arctic air
over a large water mass with little or no steerage or blockage from a low pressure
system…….the Canadian air blowing down for the Friday the 13th was creating a
perfect environment and recipe for disaster. Dew point would be only part of the
problem.
