Project demonstrates a low cost designed model for young entrepreneur outside
capital city to scale up their conventional general store one step ahead within very
limited budget and space by using locally available recycled material. Overall idea
was to sets a new benchmark for the design & construction of small scale retail
shop that priorities architectural design, lighting as well as the comfort of the
users without significant cost premiums. The idea of retail shop was conceived
by a young, enthusiastic micro entrepreneur in his village-home at Shibchor.
Upon site-visit, it was found that the owner chose a space which was 13’-11”x 93’
approximately for his shop. Thus working with such elongated, narrow space
was challenging yet interesting design exercise. During brainstorming it was
decided to break the tunnel-like space into five segments, namely the entrance
area, payment counter, two different display areas starting off with fresh produce
and daily household needs, staff and storage area at the back. Also, alternate level
change synchronized with these sections till the end. The owner was very open-
minded when the idea of using recycled materials was proposed. Hence approx.
20,000 Recycled Tubes were used as a design element on the ceiling, split bamboo
for decorative walls. The shelves were custom-built using recyled metal sheet and
angle in order to respond to the client’s need. Thus an attempt was made to break
the monotony of the space and create a wonderful shopping experience for the
customers similar to the big retail chain store within a very limited budget and
space constraints.
