Castle named a “Best Hospital” in Hawai‘i by US News & World Report
US News & World Report revealed its list of Best Hospitals for 2019-20 on July 29, and named Adventist Health Castle among the elite 33% nationally that earned an award.
Adventist Health Castle earned particular recognition for excellence in knee and hip replacement. In the specialties, procedures, and conditions the magazine evaluated, only 10 to 26 percent of hospitals were rated High Performing. And of the more than 4,500 hospitals that underwent the magazine’s rigorous analysis, fewer than 1,500 qualified for any type of award at all.
The U.S. News Best Hospitals analysis reviews hospitals’ performance in
adult and pediatric clinical specialties, procedures and conditions. Scores are based on several factors, including survival, patient safety, nurse staffing and more. Hospitals are ranked nationally in specialties from cancer to urology
and rated in common procedures and conditions, such as heart bypass surgery, hip and knee replacement and COPD.
The 2019-20 Best Hospitals specialty rankings include the top 21 highest performing hospitals across 16 specialties and nine procedures and conditions. This year 165 hospitals received a ranking in at least one adult specialty.
Windward Surgery Center celebrates 10th anniversary
On July 19, the Windward Surgery Center (WSC) celebrated its 10th anniversary. The 9,000-square-foot center opened in June of 2009 as a partnership between Adventist Health Castle and a group of physicians.
The center is housed on two floors of the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Medical Plaza and Wellness Center, has two operating rooms, two endoscopy rooms and waiting and recovery rooms. WSC offers same-day surgery, screenings and other procedures in gastroenterology, general surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, gynecology, plastics, pain management and podiatry. WSC has done over 25,000 procedures in the last 10 years.
“We enjoyed being a part of their wonderful celebration with our physicians, team members and community in their beautiful suite this afternoon,” AHCS President Kathy Raethel said at the celebration.

Jamil Sulieman, MD, Sleep and Pulmonary Medicine, talked with Kristine Uyeno of KHON2’s Take2 on June 19 and provided sleep guidelines for all ages, from infants
to seniors, to ensure a good night’s sleep. The new guidelines encourage a variety of activity for infants to 5 years-of-age from 30 minutes to 180 minutes throughout the day. Research has found
that for children, sleep deprivation can lead to obesity and other illnesses just as it does for adults.
Castle neurologist Jason Viereck, MD, shared with KHON2 viewers how to be alert to the symptoms and signs of stroke. While there may be many different symptoms, depending on which part of the brain is affected, Dr. Viereck said the most
important are weakness on one side and trouble with speech.
Dr. Viereck stressed that stroke
treatment is time-sensitive, and if a
stroke is suspected, one should call 911 immediately for an ambulance because paramedics can assess the patient and communicate with the hospital even before they arrive so everything is ready when you get there.
Dr. Viereck noted that Adventist Health Castle is nationally certified as a primary stroke center and has a team ready to treat stroke patients and offers intravenous thrombolysis (the “clot busting” medicine), which is the accepted treatment for stroke. The medical center can also provide the medical care, physical, occupational and speech therapy services the patient will need throughout their
stay. The medical center’s specialized nursing care staff undergoes continuous education, he said.
