Castle adds new surgical procedures
Adventist Health Castle surgeon Steven Fowler, MD, spoke with KHON2’s John Veneri for an In Sickness & In Health segment about two new exciting operations Castle added in 2019. One is for patients with chronic acid reflux, and the other for patients with uncontrolled diabetes.
Fowler said that for those suffering from Acid Reflux, the new LINX procedure, or Magnetic Sphincter Augmentation, places a magnetic band around the esophagus. This creates a barrier to reflux. It has minimal side effects and is safer than the standard fundoplication surgery previously offered.
The other procedure is for diabetes, and
is a modification of a complex operation that has been around since the 1980s. Called SADI or Loop Duodenal Switch, this is considered the absolute best operation with a modification to decrease the chance of operative complications.

Tips to prevent
catching the coronavirus
On Jan. 29, Adventist Health Castle primary care physician Robin Matsukawa visited KHON2’s Take2 morning news program to share health tips about the coronavirus outbreak that has sickened and killed people in Asia, Europe and that, at the time, had just reached the United States.
Dr. Matsukawa said that the coronavirus is a novel virus because it is the first time it’s been identified.
Dr. Matsukawa explained that the steps normally taken to prevent a cold work best to prevent catching the coronavirus. He said the CDC and other websites recommend handwashing for 20 seconds as the best step in prevention.
He reminded viewers to take all precautions including hand washing, avoiding touching your face, lips, nose or mouth; and staying at home if you have any symptoms.
