Castle adds new surgical procedures
Adventist Health Castle surgeon Steven Fowler, MD, spoke with KHON 2 TV’s
John Veneri for an In Sickness & In Health segment about two new exciting operations Castle added in 2019. One is for patients with chronic acid reflux, and the other for patients with uncontrolled diabetes.
Fowler said that for those suffering from Acid Reflux, the new LINX procedure, or Magnetic Sphincter Augmentation, places a magnetic band around the esophagus. This creates a barrier to reflux. It has minimal side effects and is safer than the standard fundoplication surgery previously offered.
The other procedure is for diabetes, and is
a modification of a complex operation that has been around since the 1980s. Called SADI or Loop Duodenal Switch, this is considered the absolute best operation with a modification to decrease the chance of operative complications.
