New year, new you— old junk?
By Kylie Tom, Wellness Community Health Educator
Feel like you’ve been hoarding over the years? Start the new year off with a clean slate by decluttering ALL unnecessary things! The amazing benefits of decluttering make it a worthwhile resolution: Improvement in concentration, lower stress levels, boost in mood, more creativity, and better sleep.
Don’t know where to begin? Take some inspiration from Marie Kondo’s “Tidying Up” on Netflix. She is a consultant that visits families to help them organize their homes. Below are some of her most useful tips:
Focus on sections. Start in one area, like your closet, then work your way around. This will allow you to schedule a cleaning time for each section so that you can incorporate it into a busy schedule. Or just tackle it all in a day, or two.
Purge your clothes. Donate or throw away any items that you haven’t worn in ages. Marie Kondo’s method is to ask yourself: "Does this bring me joy?” If it doesn’t, throw it out.
Trash any unnecessary bills and papers.
I’m guilty of shoving papers into a certain drawer and then forgetting they even exist. Go green and elect digitally by accessing any bill statements online.
Successful Storage. Use a storage system that will help with accessibility, visibility, and flexibility. Use containers that are transparent and label them so they can be easily identified.
Everyone has a busy schedule but having
a clean space will help alleviate stress and promote productivity. So, grab a vacuum, some trash bags, and work up a little sweat tidying your home. Happy cleaning!
