Highlights from Hui: September 25, 2019
Adventist Health Castle President Kathy Raethel, RN, MPH, MHA, began the Hui by calling on Director of Mission Integration and Spiritual Care, Jesse Seibel, to begin the session with prayer.
• First on the agenda was Erik Anderson, new Patient Care Executive, who introduced himself to associates.
• Kathy updated everyone on the Gallup Associate Engagement Survey. At that point, Castle was at 87% participation. Since then, Castle reached 95% participation, the highest in the system.
• The June-July Physician Engagement Survey had a response rate of 81%.
The Clinics were at the 99th percentile for engagement and 98th percentile
for alignment; and OR was at the 90th percentile. We were second in the system to Adventisth Health Howard Memorial Medical Center. While results showed
a decline across most measures, due to specialty coverage issues, engagement and alignment remains above the national average.
• Kathy congratulated everyone on Castle becoming fully TJC accredited for the next three years and reported that all deficiencies have been corrected.
• Low census at Castle continues, which may be due to the Pali Highway not being fully open until November; associate/ family utilization and HMO leakage; and our improvements in ALOS (average length of stay). Kathy also informed associates that BHS now has a full complement of providers and Castle has had fewer births. Kathy told associates that leadership realizes flexing has been difficult, and assured them that Castle
is taking other approaches to the low census: expanding Primary Care; gaining approval for a VA Clinic in Ka¯ne‘ohe; physician recruitment in areas like Cardiology, Urology and Orthopedics; strengthening Castle Health Group requirements and utilization by associates and their families, and tiering of options; and reviewing and revising Admission/Transfer policy.
• Kathy highlighted Castle's new physician recruiter Virginia Okamoto, MBA; new Interventional Cardiologist Jamalah Munir, MD; new Orthopedic Surgeon Christopher Lau, MD; and Steven Fowler, MD who is now seeing general as well as bariatric patients.
• Jesse Seibel then spoke about Castle’s participation in Convoy of Hope at Aloha Stadium (see related article in this issue).
• Kathy ended Hui sessions with a photo of volunteers in their brand new uniforms; congratulations for the first graduating high school COPE Health Scholars; and a letter she received from a family member who was grateful for the high quality, compassionate care given to her mom at Castle.
