Adventist Health Castle volunteer Joyce Patrick was featured July 1 on KHON2 TVs Kupuna Life segment. Joyce was recognized at Castle’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon in April for her 40 years of service.
When asked what the most rewarding aspect of volunteering was, Joy replied, “Well, I think (it’s) when you help out the patients and they’re very grateful, especially the staff. When you see them in the morning and they say thank you for being here, that’s rewarding.”
“She means everything to this hospital because she’s such a dependable person,” Volunteer Coordinator Francine Kong said. “She’s so likable, and she cares about everybody that she helps.”
Joyce said she always puts the patient first. “You have to have patience; you have to respect them—whoever they are, whether it’s the patient or the family, and really be a good listener,” she said.
“Volunteers are treasures and Joyce has been with us for 40 years,” said Adventist Health Castle President Kathy Raethel. “What a commitment that is, to give to an organization that you love so much of your time and effort. That’s
what she means to us. We love her and she’s part of our 'Ohana.”

AH Castle ER nurse Maria Moreno-Chow was highlighted in a KHON2 TV Modern Wahine segment on July 14. In addition to working as a nurse at Castle, Maria is also
a Captain in the Navy reserves. On the segment, Maria shared her experiences with deployment, patient care and talked about what it means to be a woman in the military.
Maria told host Brooke Lee that she has been in the Navy Reserves for 25 years and at AH Castle for 31 years, and said she was fortunate that Castle has been so supportive of her military career. In her military career, Maria shared that she has been deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan; to Asia on the Mercy Medical Ship; to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and recently returned from deployment to the Marshall and Micronesian Islands.
When asked if there was a difference between her career at Castle and her military career, Maria answered that although she may wear different hats, her goal of providing the best patient care is the same. She also said that much of what she learned working in the trauma bay when she was deployed, she
was able to put to use at Castle.
