OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS
Anyanya (I):
Common name for the insurgents in the first civil war (1955 - 1972).
Anyanya (II):
Armed groups formed in the Sudan before and after the second civil war in 1955. Some participated in
forming the SPLM in 1983 while others opposed it. Most of the latter eventually allied with the NIF
government in Khartoum.
Aswa:
Aswa was an internally displaced persons camp during the Second Sudanese Civil War near Nimule on the
South Sudan-Uganda border.
