IAEA to maintain presence at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said on Sept. 1 that the agency was "here to stay" and would maintain a continued presence at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Russian-occupied Enerhodar. Five inspectors from the agency remained at the station after the agency's visit on Sept. 1. Russia, which has been shelling Ukrainian positions from the territory of the plant, has been accused of using it as a shield and a tool of blackmail.
Energoatom provides Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant with urgently needed spare parts as of September 16. Ukraine's state nuclear company Energoatom reported that a 25-truck convoy passed Russian military checkpoints and arrived in Russian-occupied Enerhodar with spare parts for the repair of damaged facilities. The trucks also brought diesel fuel for power generators to ensure the stable functioning of the plant in case of a possible power outage. Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant re-connected to national grid after repair on September 17. The International Atomic Energy Agency said that one of the four damaged power lines that supplied the plant with electricity had been repaired. This will help the plant to cover electricity needs for reactor cooling and “other essential safety functions," the agency said. The plant's last operating reactor was shut down on Sept. 11. Even when the reactors are no longer operating, a "secure off-site power supply from the grid and back-up power supply systems are essential for preventing a nuclear accident, " the report reads. The plant is located in the Russian-occupied town of Enerhodar, Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
Second backup power line to Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant restored it was reported on September 13. Two operating power lines allow one to be kept in reserve while the other provides the plant with electricity necessary for “reactor cooling and other essential safety functions,” the International Atomic Energy Agency reported from the site on Sept. 12. A reactor unit that was shut down yesterday has entered a “cold shutdown state” like the facility’s five other reactors, which means the unit will not need as much energy for cooling, the IAEA said.
Russian occupiers did not let journalists visit Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that only Kremlin propagandists were present during a mission by the International Atomic Energy Agency at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Russian-occupied Enerhodar. He also said that Russia had intimidated residents of Enerhodar and forced people to lie to IAEA representatives. Zelenskiy said Russian troops are trying to turn this visit "into a fruitless tour of the plant," but he hopes that the mission will "draw objective conclusions."
