especially since Russia’s gas export to China is starting to approach full capacity.
Kazakhstan’s national oil transport operator KazTransOil (KTO) also expanded its transits of Russian oil to Uzbekistan by 74% y/y from January to November this year, to 225,000 tonnes (4,940 bpd), the company reported on December 6. A further 4,000 tonnes were planned for transit in December, it added. The figures are ramping up following a hiatus in Uzbek imports of Russian oil – Kazakhstan’s transit of Russian oil to Uzbekistan resumed in 2023, so the surge was likely driven by a low base in 2023. Nevertheless, further growth in Russian oil transit to Uzbekistan is not out of the question given sanctioned Russia’s growing need to divert oil exports away from the West.
