Agrarian Economics. Dukhnytskyi noted that Ukraine imported $754M of agricultural products from Asian countries, $256M from Latin American countries, and $148M from African countries. As well, $590M worth of Ukraine's agricultural products were bought by Poland. The top ten importers also included: Turkey, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Norway, the US, China, and Spain. In total, the top ten provide more than 57% of Ukrainian agricultural imports. Ukraine buys most of its fruits and berries abroad. The import of products of this group in eight months reached $398M. Fish and seafood, oil seeds and fruits, sunflower for sowing, vegetables (+40% in eight months), extracts, concentrates, and sauces are also leading imports. Ukraine also buys alcohol, soft drinks, tobacco products, and animal feed.
Ukraine has reduced coal imports by 300% but increased exports. In January-September 2022, Ukraine reduced the import of hard coal and anthracite by 3.2 times (by 10mn tons) to 4.5mn tons compared to the same period last year. According to the State Customs Service, $1.1B in coal was imported, 27.1% less than in January-September 2021 ($1.51B). $430.16M worth of coal came from the Russian Federation (pre-war supplies, share in imports 39.02%), $309.18M (28.04%) from the US, $127.43M (11.56%) from Australia, and $235.77M (21.38%) from other countries. Ukraine’s coal export for the first nine months of the year amounted to 624,200 tons for $191.3M. Ukraine sold coal to Slovakia for $115.99M, Poland for $47.58M, Hungary for $25.16M, and $2.57M to other countries.
Ukraine's IT services export 16% up in 2022. For eight months of 2022, IT exports have grown by 16% year over year, according to the monitoring service Opendatabot. The tech sector currently accounts for almost half of Ukraine's export of services and is one of the very few export fields in Ukraine that show positive dynamics.
Ukraine has received an additional 100 essential quotas for cargo transportation through Europe in 2023. Announced the Ministry of Infrastructure, these quotas will allow unimpeded transportation of goods by road through the territories of ECMT member countries. According to the ministry, since the beginning of the war, a large part of goods have been exported from Ukraine by road transport. In total, Ukraine will have 475 basic quotas next year, which is 27% higher than in 2022. Additional quotas will improve Ukraine's export capacity and provide an opportunity to maintain stable supply chains between our country and ECMT member countries. The ECMT permits are required for carriers transporting goods to the 52 ECMT member countries. They will allow for not only bilateral and transit transportation but also transportation to or from third countries.
Ukraine’s export of coke and scrap fell tenfold. During the first nine months of the year, Ukraine reduced the export of coke and semi-coke in natural terms by 98% compared to the same period last year, to 3,700 tons. According to the State Customs Service, in monetary terms, the export of coke and semi-coke during this period fell by 97.5% to $987,000. In January-September 2022, the export of ferrous metal scrap fell 12.9 times compared to the same period last year - to 35,280 tons. In monetary terms, the export of scrap during this period decreased by 13.9 times - to $12.64M.
