Ukraine has enough gas to get through winter. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Oct. 23 that Ukraine has 14.2bn cubic metres of natural gas in storage, which he says is enough to last the winter. “In Ukraine, despite the shelling, the heating season has started,” Shmyhal said.
Gazprom supplies gas for Europe through Ukraine in the volume of 42.6mn cubic meters per day via the Sudzha gas pumping station, a Gazprom representative told reporters, adding that the request for pumping through Sokhranovka had been rejected by the Ukrainian side.
Ukraine seeks to join in the purchase of EU gas to place off-season stocks in Ukrainian storage facilities. To increase the use of Ukraine's gas infrastructure and strengthen cooperation with the European market, Ukraine should be allowed to participate in the joint purchase of gas for the placement of off-season reserves in Ukrainian storage facilities, said the director of the GTS Operator of Ukraine, Olga Bielkova. According to the director, Ukraine’s potential as an exporter of renewable and natural gas should not be ignored. Bielkova added that Ukraine's offers great potential to the REPowerEU plan, which envisages ridding the EU of dependence on Russian fossil fuels, and would contribute to the development of interregional gas transportation. The repurposing of the existing infrastructure is the key to solving the problem of bottlenecks in the security of gas supplies from the Mediterranean to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
Ukraine has doubled its gas intake from the EU. Ukraine's gas transportation system continues to increase its natural gas intake from Europe with further pumping into its underground storage facilities, as countries take advantage of lower gas prices, according to operational data from the Operator of GTS of Ukraine. On October 25 and 26, the application for gas receipts on the country's western border increased to 21-21.5mn cubic meters per day, compared to about 8-10mn cubic meters last week and 3mn cubic meters in the first half of October. During October 1-25, 188mn cubic meters of gas arrived in Ukraine from Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary. The head of Ukrtransgaz, Serhiy Pereloma, reported on October 21 that the volume of gas stored by non-residents in Ukraine’s PSG who are utilizing the customs warehouse model has increased sevenfold since the beginning of October.
Ukraine is rapidly increasing gas imports from the EU. Since October 15, Ukraine has tripled its import of natural gas from Europe against the backdrop of lower gas prices. According to operational data from the Operator of the GTS of Ukraine, on October 14 the application for gas import to Ukraine from EU countries amounted to about 3mn cubic metres, and on October 15-16, it increased to 9.4-9.5mn cubic metres. On October 17, there were 7.8mn cubic metres received by Ukraine. During this time, the Ukrainian company accepted an application from Russian Gazprom for gas transit to the EU on October 17 in the amount of 42.4mn cubic metres. As a result, the spot price of gas fell to
