Germany still has no real alternatives to gas supplies from Russia, even after the liquefied natural gas (LNG) deal with Qatar, Chairman of the Bundestag’s Committee on Climate Action and Energy Klaus Ernst said on his Twitter on Tuesday. “The federal government is celebrating the LNG deal with Qatar and bragging about big numbers. In reality, these twomn tonnes of LNG equal 3% of Germany's gas consumption. There are still no real alternatives to Russian gas!” he said.
Germany, Qatar sign a 30mt L-T contract for LNG, reports Bloomberg. The 15Y contract calls for 2mt/yr (2.7bcm/yr) of LNG to be supplied to Germany by Qatar beginning in 2026. This is a modest-sized contract, and we assume more such action. Our current assumptions call for long-term exports to Europe+Turkey of 100bcm vs 175bcm in 2021 and perhaps 85bcm in 2022.
