Russia’s sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs)
plummeted by 52.8% on the year to 45,228 in October, the Association of
European Businesses (AEB) said in a statement on November 8.
In January–October, sales of new cars and LCVs in Russia dropped by 60.8%
to 502,500 vehicles, the associadtion said.
The sales of Lada cars by car producer AvtoVAZ fall by 25% on the year to
19,100 units in October and dropped by 51% to almost 143,000 cars in
January–October, the AEB also said.
Russia is reviving the Moskvich brand though the design has been
updated. Manufacturing has resumed at the former Renault factory in Russia,
which shut after the invasion of Ukraine and was later taken over by the
government. Truck-maker Kamaz said the first cars would go on sale next
month. It is reviving the Soviet-era Moskvich brand although the car’s design
has been updated. Kamaz, which signed a deal to be the plant's technological
partner in July, and the government are working with Chinese carmaker JAC,
according to Reuters, which cited anonymous sources. Kamaz said it expected
to produce about 600 cars by the end of the year. It hopes to ramp up
manufacturing to 100,000 vehicles a year in 2024, some of which will be
electric. Overall, car production in the country has declined and sales may fall
below onemn this year for the first time in Russia's modern history, Reuters
reported.
Russian state-owned car plant Moskvich, formerly the plant of France’s
Renault, plans to produce about 50,000 cars in 2023, some of which will be
given to the car sharing companies in Moscow, the Moscow Region, and other
regions, the capital’s department of transport said in a statement on Monday.
“In 2025, we plan to produce a fully-national car at the Moskvich plant. The
degree of production localization at Mosvkich will grow at the highest possible
rate,” the department said in its Telegram channel. “Next year the plant is to
produce about 50,000 new cars, some which will be used to renew the car
sharing stock in Moscow, the Moscow Region, and other Russian regions.”
Mass assembly of cars was launched at the plant on November 23.
Russia’s car production increased by 19% on the month in October,
Deputy Prime Minister and Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov told
President Vladimir Putin on November 16. “In May we produced 12,000 of all
kinds of vehicles, from cars to buses, in October we reached 48,000. This is
19% more than in September,” he said. The car industry is stabilising, the
workload of production lines is increasing at AvtoVAZ, GAZ, Kamaz, UAZ, Ural
