Russian President Vladimir Putin has seen a sharp increase in his popularity in all the main indicators characterizing Russians' attitudes towards the president and other institutions of power over the past year, according to Mikhail Mamonov, the head of the political analysis division of the state-owned Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM).
Speaking during a roundtable discussion at the Expert Institute for Social Research, Mamonov noted that pollsters had recorded a growth in trust, approval ratings, and legitimacy of all government bodies.
Mamonov stated that the effect of consolidation around the leader remained, with a significant increase in all the main indicators of attitudes towards the president. Specifically, the trust indicator stood at 78% by the end of 2022, which was 13 percentage points higher compared to 2021. The increase in the annual average of the president's approval in 2022 was 15 percentage points (75% vs. 60% in 2021).
Mamonov highlighted the biggest dynamic was seen in the legitimacy indicator, which assessed the attitude towards the actions in whose interests the government works, the majority or the minority. About 73% of respondents said that the president acts in the interests of the majority, which was a 20-point increase compared to 2021. Moreover, there has been an increase in the legitimacy of all government bodies, including federal authorities, the government, the State Duma, the Federation Council, and regional authorities.
Mamonov stressed that the level of support and approval of the activities of these institutions had increased significantly. This allows for a discussion on the growth of stability of the system and the strengthening of its legitimacy as a whole. Additionally, 54% of respondents said that the country's top leaders have a long-term development strategy.
It is worth noting that the polls were conducted before President Putin's State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly. Therefore, Mamonov suggested that this number will increase now since the public has heard the answers to some of the questions it has been interested in.
Russians' attitudes towards President Putin and other institutions of power have improved significantly over the past year, according to a recent poll. Trust, approval ratings, and legitimacy have increased for all government bodies, allowing for a discussion on the growth of stability of the system and the strengthening of its legitimacy as a whole.
