            More than 146mn people permanently reside in Russia as of January 1, 2023, the Russian statistical agency Rosstat reported on Wednesday.
The population as of January 1, 2023 stood at 146,424,729, including 109,634,815 urban residents and 36,789,914 people living in rural areas.
The population in Russia decreased by 555,332 over the year (it totaled 146,980,061 as of January 1, 2022).
According to statistics, more than 40mn people live in the Central Federal District, with more than 13mn in Moscow and over 8.5mn in the Moscow Region. The population of the Northwestern Federal District accounts for more than 13.6mn, with 5.6mn living in St. Petersburg and over 2mn in the Leningrad Region.
There are more than 16.6mn living in the Southern Federal District, over 10mn in the North Caucasian, over 28.6mn in the Volga, over 12mn in the Ural, over 16.6mn in the Siberian, and almost 8mn in the Far Eastern Federal Districts.
The country has sixteen cities with a population of over onemn. These are Volgograd, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Moscow, Nizhniy Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Ufa, Chelyabinsk, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk, Perm and Voronezh.
