      Russia’s demographics are crashing as the replacement rate falls from 1.55 to 1.2 that will see Russia just over 400,000 people by the end of the decade due to the war in Ukraine and after effects of the pandemic.
Previously Russia had a higher replacement rate than the European average of 1.4 thanks to Putin’s babies, very successful natal polices to boost the population that Russian President Vladimir Putin put in place right at the start of his presidency.
Plans by Putin’s government had set the goal of starting to reverse the decline in the population in 2022 before growth should resume in 2030. Yet weeks before the mobilisation was announced in September, an internal report drafted for a closed-door meeting showed officials were already concluding those targets were unrealistic, Bloomberg reported.
Citing the consequences of the coronavirus and migration outflows, a government report proposed a revision that envisaged a decrease of 416,700 people in 2030.
Should military operations continue in the coming months, as expected, Russia may see less than 1.2mn births next year, the lowest in modern history,
