Ukraine continued to produce and export significant amounts of grain and corn, which remains its most important export product. Europe is one of its biggest customers.
In the 2023/24 marketing year, Ukraine's wheat production is estimated at 22.3mn tonnes, a 3% decrease from the previous year. The yield is projected at 4.29 tonnes per hectare, a 7% decline from the prior year, while the harvested area has expanded by 4% to 5.2mn hectares.
Corn production is slightly higher than wheat (thanks to Nikita Krushchev), estimated at circa 30-35mn tonnes, representing a 19% decrease from the previous year. The yield was estimated to be 6.39 tonnes per hectare, down 17% against the prior year, with a harvested area of 4.1mn hectares, a 2% reduction.
The share of wheat exports within the total production is 82.5% and the share of total exports going to the EU is 50.7%. Of the total wheat exports the EU accounts for a bit less than two thirds (61.4%).
The share of corn exports from the total production is 84.3% and the share of total exports going to the EU is 32.3%. Of the total corn exports the EU accounts for a bit more than one third (38.3%). However, during the first nine months of the 2023/24 season the EU’s share climbed to 61%, according to reports.
These declines are attributed to adverse weather conditions, including drought, and the ongoing conflict affecting agricultural activities.
In the 2023 marketing year, Ukraine's wheat exports totalled approximately 18.4mn tonnes, with the EU importing 11.3mn tonnes mostly from Ukraine, equivalent to about 4.6% of the EU’s own total wheat production.
