Slovenia offers several advantages that make it an appealing destination for FDI. These include its modern infrastructure with access to key EU transport corridors, a strategic port on the Adriatic Sea, the Port of Koper, providing entry to the Mediterranean, a highly skilled and educated workforce, and its proximity to Central European and Balkan markets. As a member of the Schengen Area, the EU and the Eurozone, Slovenia provides seamless integration into European markets.
In December, Port of Koper received approval for its largest investment in a decade: a €153mn expansion of its container terminal. The project will extend the terminal's first pier by 340 metres, create nearly seven hectares of additional storage space and deepen the seabed. These enhancements will boost the terminal’s annual container handling capacity by 50%, increasing it from 1.2mn to 1.8mn containers.
The Port of Koper aims to complete the expansion within three years, by the end of 2027. This ambitious project underscores the port's growing strategic significance and its commitment to maintaining competitiveness in the Adriatic shipping market.
The Slovenian government has approved funding for two new projects under the GREen MObility (GREMO) initiative, which involves eleven major Slovenian automotive suppliers. The projects are valued at €63mn, with the state contributing €38.4mn.
In November, Chinese electric car manufacturer Dongfeng achieved a significant milestone with the delivery of its first Box model to a customer in Slovenia.
This development highlights the strengthening ties between Slovenia and China in the automotive sector. As global economic and geopolitical dynamics evolve, Slovenian automotive suppliers are increasingly pursuing opportunities in the growing Chinese market.
The automotive industry is a vital pillar of Slovenia’s economy, contributing 10% of the country’s GDP. Slovenia's Economy Minister, Matjaž Han, expressed confidence that Chinese companies would recognise the expertise and strategic benefits of collaborating with Slovenian suppliers, further enhancing bilateral partnerships in the sector.
