9.1.6 Agriculture sector news
Ukraine has already collected 100,000 tonnes of grain from the new crop; this season, 56mn tonnes will be threshed. Head of the Ministry of Agricultural Policy, Taras Vysotsky, said that as of June 20, 50,000 tonnes of the 2024 harvest had been harvested, and this week the figure has exceeded 100,000 tonnes. The main crops are winter and spring barley, peas, and wheat. According to the minister, the harvest of grain and leguminous crops this year will amount to 56mn tonnes. This is a good indicator, in Vysotsky's opinion, considering the country is in the third year of war. He stated that there is a decrease in arable land for grain crops, which relates to crop rotation. At the same time, the area under oil crops was expanded significantly. Therefore, 20-22mn tonnes of oil crops are expected this year. In conditions of war, Ukrainian farmers are harvesting 80% of the country's agricultural land because 18-20% of it is temporarily under occupation. At the same time, all agricultural land controlled by Ukraine is fully sown, the official noted.
How has the war affected the profitability of agricultural production in Ukraine?According to the Ministry of Agricultural Policy, since July 2023, the profitability of the main crop types has been steadily improving. However, grain production has not yet broken even, and the profitability of oil crops remains minimal. According to an updated forecast, in 2024, oil crop profitability will be higher than previously forecasted, but cereal production will continue to be unprofitable. Compared with the previous period, the increase in profitability relates to the restoration of export sea routes. A higher level of crop profitability is expected in 2024 compared to the previous forecast. Sunflower profitability is expected at $45 per ton, soybeans at $83 per ton, and rapeseed at $78 per ton. The situation in the livestock sector in 2024 has been generally stable: most types of production remain profitable, except for beef production. In April, a decrease in the profitability of all types of products, except for poultry, was observed due to an increase in barley and corn prices, a seasonal decrease in milk prices, and a decrease in pork prices.
