Note that the primary asset in the Donbas is coal, especially anthracite, which is widely used in energy and metallurgy. Currently, all deposits of this valuable type of solid fuel are located in the occupied territories, in 71% of the region's mines. Before the war in 2013, 151 mines were operating in Donbas, but by the end of 2022, only 33 remained.
China lobbying for its alternative peace plan ahead of Ukraine's summit, Reuters reports. Ten diplomats confirmed China's efforts to lobby for its plan, while one of them called China's campaign a "subtle boycott" of the summit.
Argentina joins Ramstein format in support of Ukraine. The U.S.-led UDCG comprises over 50 countries, including all 31 NATO members, and meets regularly to coordinate military aid for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
Ukraine's victory in the war is a basic requirement for its membership in NATO. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg noted: "I expect that the allies will make an important announcement in the run-up to the Washington summit and at the summit itself regarding the supply of a larger amount of the military equipment that is urgently needed for Ukraine to win as a sovereign independent state. We must ensure that Ukraine wins. This is the absolute minimum for Ukraine to become a member of the Alliance," he noted. The Secretary-General notes that during the summit the leaders of the Alliance countries would strengthen NATO's role in providing military assistance to Ukraine and undertake long-term financial commitments. "For the past several months, delays in providing military aid to Ukraine have had consequences on the battlefield. But now the allies are increasing their support," he said. Stoltenberg recalled that since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, Ukraine’s allies have provided military aid worth €40B every year.
No point in peace talks, General Budanov says. Ukraine's Military Intelligence Chief Kyrylo Budanov said in an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer published June 23, that peace talks are pointless because the only option is to reclaim occupied territory.
Six more participants have joined Ukraine’s peace summit communique, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on June 23. He did not specify the new countries or organizations that signed on.
Ukraine will officially begin negotiations regarding its accession to the EU on June 25. The EU Council approved the negotiating framework for Ukraine and Moldova and confirmed that intergovernmental conferences to launch negotiations will be held on June 25 in Luxembourg. President Zelenskyy approved the composition of the Ukrainian delegation that will participate in negotiations with the EU to reach an agreement regarding Ukraine's accession to the EU. The delegation includes 35 people, among them the Head of the Office of President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, with his deputies; the Minister of Environmental Protection; deputy ministers of economy, finance, digital transformation, agricultural policy, and justice, the head of the Antimonopoly Committee, Ukraine's EU representative, and several others. The delegation will be headed by the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Olha Stefanishyna.
