At the same time, according to information provided by PPC JSC on sales of new vehicles based on data on their transfer to owners, September 2023 was marked by an increase in sales by 120,5%, or by 63,568 units compared to September 2022, and amounted to 116,324 cars. In the third quarter of the year the market grew by 42,8%.
Alexey Kalitsev, Chairman of the Automobile Manufacturers Committee, comments: “Over 9 months of this year, we have observed a steady growth trend in the new car sales market, which indicates its high potential and gradual recovery despite rising prices and serious volatility in the exchange rate.”
Russia’s sales of new cars almost tripled on the year and grew by 0.6% on the month to 110,400 vehicles in September, research agency Autostat said in a statement on October 4. In January–September, new car sales rose by 51.1% to 717,300 units.
Sales of new Lada cars amounted to 34,991 units, which accounted for almost 32% of the market in September, as compared with 40% in September 2022. Chinese car brands Chery and Haval occupied the second and third places with 12,102 and 11,080 cars, respectively.
New car sales in Russia jumped 49% year on year in the period January-September 2023 to reach almost 906,000 units sold, the Russian Industry and Trade Ministry said, citing data from the Passport Industrial Consulting firm.
"In January-September 2023, the market for new motor vehicles (up to three years old) stood at 905,926 units (+49% versus the same period in 2022 [when] 607,537 units [were sold]). The share of domestically produced motor vehicles is about 50%," the ministry noted.
The new car market amounted to 718,900 units in the reporting period, up 48% in annual terms. Light commercial vehicle sales gained 27% over the first nine months of 2023 to reach 70,700 units. The market skyrocketed by fully 85% in the truck segment to 103,300 units sold, and saw healthy 26% growth in the bus segment to 13,000 units sold.
Electric vehicle (EV) sales expanded by 2.1 times in January-September 2023 to total 12,200 units sold, including 1,900 EVs manufactured in Russia. The percentage of imported vehicles in the EV segment held constant at the level of 85%, the ministry noted.
