Ukraine has stopped the transit of one-third of gas to Europe due to war.
Ukraine has been forced to suspend gas transit through its Luhansk stations since May 11, which lie in Russian-occupied territory, supplying a third of its gas to Europe, announced the operator of the gas transmission system of Ukraine (GTS). The operator stated that force majeure had occurred, making it impossible to continue transporting gas through the Sokhranivka gas metering station as well as the Novopskov border compressor station. Novopskov is the primary compressor station of the Ukrainian GTS in the Luhansk region, through which 32.6 million cubic meters per day are transmitted from Russia to Europe.
Ukraine can completely abandon gas imports with increased production.
Ukraine has a real opportunity to completely cease importing gas by developing its production, including biogas, as stated by General Director of GTS Ukraine Serhiy Makogon. According to him, Ukraine has huge potential for biogas production - up to 8bn cubic meters of biogas per year. This is a very ambitious goal that can be achieved over the next ten years. However, a half-billion cubic meters of biogas in two years is very realistic. As an example, in Denmark, where 27% of the gas in their network is biomethane (biogas brought to methane quality), there has been steady growth in the last 5-6 months. As a result, Denmark expects to have a 100% green gas system beginning in 2030-2035.
Poland calls on Germany to close Nord Stream 1 due to the Russian invasion. “Germany should close the Nord Stream 1 pipeline by the end of the year. Work should begin on the seventh package of sanctions against Russia for its armed aggression against Ukraine,” said the head of the Polish government, Mateusz Morawiecki. He stressed that the West still does not help Ukraine enough. Therefore, all his talks in Davos will focus on assisting Ukraine, as not everyone is aware of "how crucial events are on Poland's eastern border." According to him, some would like to return to relations with Russia as they existed before the war against Ukraine, which began on February 24 this year.
Poland wants Ukraine to join the International Energy Agency. Warsaw intends to invite Ukraine to join the International Energy Agency (IEA) at the organisation's next meeting in Paris, said Polish Minister of Climate and Environment Anna Moskva. "Poland wants to represent Ukraine to the International Energy Agency at the next meeting in Paris. To begin with, we would like to announce them as an observer. We already have the support of the IEA," Anna Moscow said. The Minister also said that Poland continues to supply oil products to Ukraine and is currently negotiating the import of electricity from Ukraine.
