Trade turnover between Russia and Turkey fell sharply in the first half of 2024, RBK writes with reference to TurkStat. It was exports to Russia that fell the most. Exports of goods from Turkey to Russia fell by 28.3% over the first half of the year (to $4.16bn), and by almost 30% y/y in June. Russian exports to Turkey, which account for the bulk of trade turnover, fell less — by 10% (to $22bn). Russian exports are quite stable because they are dominated by raw materials. More than 70% ($16bn) came from oil, gas, and coal supplies. Here, the dynamics are explained by Turkey's decision to suspend imports of Russian wheat to prevent a drop in prices on the domestic market.
