2.5 Tehran doesn’t need nuclear bomb says Iran’s atomic agency
Iran does not need nuclear weapons and Tehran does not intend to move towards the creation of a nuclear bomb, a representative of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Behrouz Kamalvandi told IRNA on August 2.
Mixed messages have been coming out of Tehran of late with several officials hinting that Tehran could take a decision to go for the bomb if the US does not come back in line with requirements of the nuclear deal, or JCPOA.
"Iran has such strategic capabilities that it does not need a nuclear bomb and will not move in this direction," Kamalvandi was quoted as saying. "We will continue enriching uranium in order to meet the needs of our country," he added.
On August 1, an AEOI official announced the launch of several hundred new uranium enrichment centrifuges.
According to the AEOI, several technical parts, including IR-1 centrifuges and advanced IR-6 centrifuges, were put into action.
August 2 brought further comments on the situation with Iran’s nuclear development programme from the head of the UN nuclear watchdog. "Good words" from Iran were not enough to satisfy international inspectors, said International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi, who added that he hoped Tehran was ready to be transparent about its nuclear programme, which was "moving ahead very, very fast".
"They have a very ambitious nuclear program that needs to be verified in the appropriate way. The program is moving ahead very, very fast and not only ahead, but sideways as well, because it's growing in ambition and in capacity," said Grossi.
