The Lakum (For You) Initiative
Last month, we were presented with the challenge of assembling and delivering 1,200 donation
boxes all across our school. With the help of our peers, we dedicated numerous hours to make
these boxes from scratch. Our dedicated SLO® prefects worked systematically and meticulously
until every last box was pieced together. At the beginning of March, we met our second task -
what we were going to do with a now staggering mountain of yellow boxes. Our students showed
empathy and compassion as they were able to relate to and personally connect with the children
who would receive the donations. A lot of love went into these boxes, and it was wonderful to
witness those children receive the contributions, which included school supplies, hygiene
products, and clothing. We would like to thank Mr. Halim (Our Student Life Coordinator) for
giving our grade the opportunity to tackle a challenge like this one. Moreover, we would have
never been able to do it without the help of our tireless Grade 10 students. We are very proud to
say that we gave back to our community and that we were able to involve a large number of
students in this endeavor. -- Joe Geagea and Shaza Yousef, Grade 10 The Lakum (For You)
Initiative is a charity program aimed at providing useful and educational gifts to underprivileged
children throughout the world donated by school children within the United Arab Emirates.
Custom-made Lakum boxes can be delivered to the schools to be filled with new and useful gifts
at school (or home); and then dropped off at assigned collection point in the schools. The boxes
are then collected, shipped and delivered directly to the child in need.
We aim to put a smile on over 10,000 children’s faces this year!
