Akrites
Akritas (in the Pontic language) or Akritis (in
Byzantine history) is a term derived from the word
akra, which in Byzantine times meant the borders
of the state.
The Akrites guarded the Byzantine borders from
enemies. They became famous because they fought
and defeated the Arabs from the Black Sea to
Mesopotamia.
They were great and that's why they praised them
in the Acritic songs.
