7 easy steps to a living flower arrangement
Cut flowers in a crystal vase are so 2017. Go natural this spring with a living
flower arrangement as your dining room centerpiece—or anywhere you'd
like a cheery pop of fresh color in your home.

The Kingsmill Landscape Team is here to help with these seven simple steps:
1 PICK YOUR FLOWERS | Bulbs are best. Whether they're daffodils plucked right
from your garden or potted tulips from a nursery. Smaller perennials can work too—
just make sure you keep the roots intact.
2 CHOOSE YOUR CONTAINER | The best thing about a living flower arrangement
is you can use anything for a container—so get creative! It doesn't need to have a drain
hole, but it does need to be able to hold enough soil to cover the bulbs or root system.
3 REMOVE THE FLOWERS | If you're digging them up from the ground,
make sure you get underneath the bulb or root system. For potted flowers,
just knock all the dirt from the bulbs/root ball and carefully separate them.
4 ARRANGE YOUR BLOOMS | To make your arrangement look its best,
place the tallest flowers in the center and the shortest on the outer perimeter.
We recommend creating your living arrangement outside, because this project
               is about to get messier.
5 ADD THE SOIL | Once you're happy with the placement of your flowers, add soil
to cover the bulbs/roots. Go with more than you think you need—you'll find out why
               in the next step.

6 WATER YOUR CONTAINER | Remember, this is a living arrangement, so these
guys need a drink. Once you water the container, the soil will settle and you can bring
it inside. NEED TO KNOW: Without sun, flowers will only last four to five days, so don't
make your living arrangement (or bring it inside) too far in advance of a special occasion.

7 GIVE BACK TO THE EARTH | The best thing about a living arrangement is you
can easily replant the flowers in an outdoor pot (or the ground) to bloom the rest of
the season. You can even re-use them again and again in future living arrangements.

            Oysters JLG
In peak season, James Landing Grille serves up more than 35,000 oysters to
Kingsmill's guests and members. 35,000! As you can imagine, Executive Chef
Justin Dallinger has some go-to ways to prepare this 100% locally sourced shellfish.
But his hands-down favorite is Oysters JLG, which involves broiling York River oysters
in bacon horseradish butter and topping them with shallot and beet jam. It's a true
            feast for the senses!
Want to cook Oysters JLG at home? Well, shucks—you can get the recipe on our website.
