Anna is married to the wealthy and old Alexei
Karenin, but neither has much enthusiasm for their
marriage. Whilst visiting her brother, Anna meets the
handsome Count Vronsky. They fall in love, and begin
an affair. When Anna falls pregnant, she begs Alexei
for a divorce. He offers her two options - she can
leave Vronsky, resume her marriage, and keep the
baby, or stay with Vronsky and give up her unborn
child.
