This self-portrait documents
an important moment in the
empirical experimentation of
contemporary Masters'
research. The reference to Felice Casorati is evident in the simplification of the planes that leads Vanni to an interesting chromatic transposition of tonal variations.

In this self-portrait Vanni experiments with Van Gogh's approach with an awareness of Rouault's elaborations. The two influences will evolve in different ways. The first will develop in the drawings made in the Dutch countryside where he will try to make the wavy rhythms caused by the wind on high grasses. The second influence will remain implicit in the constant awareness that Vanni will maintain of the importance of the pictorial material. Both will manifest themselves very clearly in the material- rhythmic elaboration of the paintings inspired by the Greek seascapes of the early sixties.
