The attempt to integrate his
previous views of Rome with the exaggerated perspective and graphic use of black observed in De Chirico's works is evident in this urban landscape seen from the house where he lived in Via Sistina, in Rome. This attempt will not be developed but testifies to Vanni's desire, even before the Parisian period, to experiment on his own the trends of the 20th century movements that interested him.

This portrait painted shortly before his departure for Paris demonstrates the importance for Vanni of Picasso's work, which here is distinctly related to the Blue Period, and later extended to all his research. Many of the works of the early Parisian period are based on an analysis of Picasso's figuration combined with a quest for alternative syntax.
