This work was painted in May
1951 when Vanni rented a
cabin near a lake in the Dutch countryside, to continue the research begun the year before. There is a further parting from the traditional Cubist composition undertaken with Eclipse, as well as a return to a direct observation of nature. The modulation of the plane takes its cue from the optical phenomena of reflections and refractions of the cultivated fields in the ponds of water that rhythm the landscape, suggesting geometric grids with which to modulate the plane. The horizon line becomes part of his formal repertoire where attention focuses on extremely small elements with respect to the size of the painting These compositinal elements will be developed by Vanni over the next ten years.
