Vanni worked for a long time trying to synthesize what he had been discovering until then on this ambitious work, unfortunately lost (only some preparatory studies remain). Light represents the unifying element of the two parallel researches he had pursued on the human figure and landscapes. He juxtaposes the Mediterranean sunlight that creates forms by marking the matter into blinding glare or impenetrable dark shadow, to the Nordic light (here represented by the eclipse) that permeates all things, creating an image in which luminescence becomes an integral part of matter.
