Returning to Paris, after his
stay in Holland, Vanni produced a series of works strongly influenced by Matisse and Arp in which he studied in depth the relationship between full and empty spaces. He rejects the conventional representation where the “full” is associated with the subject and the “empty” with the surrounding space. In order to obtain this result he uses an austere white-black-grey palette that marks the movement in the composition and determines the unity of the whole. The sensitivity acquired in this research will be fundamental for the development of the compositional balance of the Greek paintings of the early sixties.
