In this landscape painted at the end of his first Dutch stay, Vanni achieves what he considers the first true result of a personal vision. The surrounding world becomes a source of stimuli that have the function of suggesting new interpretations to be given to pre-existing concepts. Vanni returns to a formal plurality in which he places the distortion of space of Cubist origin side by side with the narrative space of Melanesian art, expressed in distinct subjects that rhythmically mark the composition.

Vinkeveen Notte
Vinkeveen, 1950
Egg Tempera on Canvas 27 x 17.5 in., 69 x 44 cm. Vanni Estate Collection
This work was painted, like
the previous one, at the end of his stay in Holland in '49-'50. It depicts the influence of the Matisse cut-outs, whose curvilinear forms create reversible negative-positive forms that Vanni would later develop in Paris in his works on the theme of dance. This painting is also witness to a sophisticated use of color that interact in a dark but vibrant chord. It is showing a coloristic sensibility that will be fully developed a few years afterwards during his studies of color interaction with Josef Albers at Yale University.
