This work, like the series of
clowns performed while attending the Amsterdam circus, represents one of Vanni's rare explorations of expressionist figuration. One can also clearly feel the Klee- ian influence that was soon to disappear from Vanni's depiction of the human figure while remaining indissolubly present in his aesthetic throughout his work.
