In this work painted at the beginning of '59, after his return to Paris, Vanni shows how painting technique was essential for the expression of his figurative logic. The red background, contrasting its Gestaltic meaning, is painted with a technique that suggests an aerial reading, underlining its spatial value. It is in fact made up of three layers, where the first layer of carmine allows a glimpse of the canvas's weft; the middle layer of a brighter red is spread in a fragmentary manner and the upper layer of scarlet is concentrated in rubbing around the stellar forms. This helps to recreate the phenomenon that Vanni had observed in Holland in the luminous density of the air.
