Tybout Tract on Blackbird Forest Road
Blackbird State Forest, located on the border
of New Castle and Kent Counties, is Delaware’s
northernmost state forest. It has ten tracts
totaling over 5,400 acres and contains a mixture of oaks, yellow poplar, maple, gums, and hickories. A popular site for outdoor recreation, it features 40 miles of trails used for hiking, running, bicycling, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. There is also a half mile paved nature trail designed for wheelchair accessibility. The trail system at Blackbird interconnects five primitive campsites and four picnic sites, available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Blackbird is also open to hunting and catch-and-release fishing.

Created in 1951, Fort Delaware is one of Delaware’s first state parks. The Union fortress dates back to 1859 and once served as a prison for Confederate prisoners of war.
From the parking area in Delaware City, visitors take a half-mile ferry ride to
Pea Patch Island and are then transported from the island dock to the granite and brick
fortress. Here, authentically clad historic interpreters begin your journey back to the summer of 1864. Fort Delaware State Park promises an unforgettable experience each time you visit.
